Hare Proposes "New 'New Deal'"
If there's to be a true economic recovery, it has to include jobs. That's what U. S. Rep. Phil Hare (D-Rock Island) says.

Speaking to Illinois reporters on a conference call Friday afternoon, Hare said he is proposing a New Deal for a New Economy Act. He says it would, over three years, use $180 million left over from the TARP bailout.

In addition to creating transportation projects and small-business tax incentives, the bill is reminiscent of the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps.

Hare said one way the bill could work is through grants to non-profit groups. He gave as an example a YWCA, which could hire counselors for its domestic-violence shelter.

Hare will be in Galesburg Saturday morning holding a press conference at City Hall on a different proposal, one regarding health insurance benefits for the unemployed.
