No Complaints About "No Complaint Day"
Who knew a little thing like encouraging Galesburg residents to turn that potentially collective frown upside down would work as well as it did.

That's according to Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza, who told the City Council recently he was admittedly a little taken aback by all the media attention given to him proclaiming the day before Thanksgiving to be "No Complaint Day," based on a resident's urging.

Garza says he feels that way in part because, to say the least, the city got more than a little media attention from it.

"I did interviews with the N.P.R., got picked up by The Associated Press, a number of papers throughout the entire State of Illinois, and beyond," Garza said. "U.S.A. Today picked it up -- just, you know, little blips. We did interviews with various television stations. And what was interesting, too, was that I did interviews with the B.B.C. and from London, England."

Garza said most important, though, was that he got phone calls from plenty of other mayors in the state and elsewhere asking about how they could implement something similar.

He says it may just end up leading to a more national effort, which is something officials said they were trying to accomplish with "No Complaint Day" all along.
