| Knox County Health Department Ready for First Full H1N1 Clinic |
There's a simple answer to an important question starting Tuesday.
"Anyone who comes in the door."
Knox County Health Department Community Health Improvement Director Michele Fishburn is referring to the fact that starting Tuesday, anyone over six-months of age can receive an H1N1 vaccination from the Health Department, regardless of whether or not they were in a so-called priority group identified by the Centers for Disease Control.
The State Public Health Department announced last week that the vaccine would be available to anyone starting Tuesday.
Fishburn tells WGIL there is still one restriction in place, however.
"If you are eligible for the flu mist, you will be offered the flu mist," Fishburn said. "That is because we do still have a lot of individuals who will be in for H1N1, and have to have the injectable. They aren't eligible for the flu mist."
Fishburn says there are about 2,500 doses of the H1N1 vaccine available in either the mist or injectible forms, but shipments of additional vaccine are coming in more regularly than during the shortage that precipitated the limitation of of distribution to begin with.
She says over 5,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine have been administered by the health department already, and another 2,600 have been distributed to other groups like both of Galesburg's hospitals.
The first open H1N1 clinic is Tuesday from 9am to 4:30pm at the Health Department, with another scheduled for this Friday starting at 10.
