Crops Remain in Fields in Illinois
It's the middle of December, and 10 percent of Illinois' corn crop is still in the fields.

USDA crop statistician Mark Schleusener says just when you think farmers are in a position to finish the harvest, weather deals another setback. Last week, it was in Northwest Illinois, where heavy snow prevented farmers from working their fields.

Schleusener says farmers want the snow off the corn, and hard ground, whether dry or frozen, on which to operate combines. Grain elevators are having a hard time keeping up with the volume of corn that's being brought in for drying.

Schleusener says farmers need the revenue from the corn that's still out there, even if they have to work hard to get it. In most years past, the corn would have been long since 100 percent harvested by this date.
