District 205 Board Members React to Money State Owes
The Galesburg School District is, to say the least, owed a lot of money from the state of Illinois, and the Superintendent and school board have a message for the Governor and anyone else making that a reality: put the check in the mail.

Doctor Gene Denisar told the District-205 board Monday night the state is already owed $2.5 million dollars in requested vouchers for various district services that the state hasn't cut checks for. Part of the problem, Denisar says, is the dispute over lending between Governor Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes that's keeping state bills from being paid.

Denisar is urging something to be done, and quick, and board member Doctor Barry Swanson agrees.

"I don't think we can just sit around and just keep taking it," Swanson said. "I think there needs to be some action taken, whether that's through a state organization, or if that's through our own Board of Education raising cain about it."

Board member Rick Welty says he doesn't know what the district should do, but he knows what it shouldn't.

"Certainly standing idly by on the sidelines is not the answer," Welty said. "Something has to be done."

Some of the oldest vouchers not paid back by the state yet date as far back as August.

The Galesburg School Board Monday night adopted a $14 million levy request for next year's property tax bills, and they approved a new copier/printer lease with Xerox that will save the district over half of what the district pays now.

Board members also okayed issuing lease certificates so that it can formally purchase the former Giant Foods location at Seminary and Fremont Street. Closing date on the sale is expected sometime next month.
