District 205 Superintendent to Quinn, Hynes, Lawmakers in Springfeld: Where's Our Money?
POSTED 10:55pm 12/14/09 The Superintendent of the Galesburg School District has one simple message for Governor Pat Quinn, Comptroller Dan Hynes, and essentially every state lawmaker: pay up, and pay up now.

Doctor Gene Denisar told the District-205 School Board as part of a discussion on the district's audit Monday night that the district is owed roughly $2.1 million this fiscal year by the state in the form of vouchers for services provided that the state Comptroller has not paid out.

Denisar says some district services are owed more than others. "Funding for children requiring special ed services: $179,000 short. Orphanage money: $36,000 short," Denisar said. "Regular and vocational transportation: $172,000 short. Transporation for special education services: $60,000 short. ...Early Childhood Block Grant: we're short $625,000 in state funding."

Denisar says that's not counting things like money for Reading Improvement Grants, and over $200,000 in money owed under the National School Lunch Program.

What's more, he says he fears the district may never make some of that money back, because the state is just now applying for $1 billion in federal economic stimulus money that part of the state budget is relying on, the lions share of which is supposed to fund education.

Denisar says he doesn't really care how it happens, but he wants the district paid, and says the, in his words, "Mickey Mouse" games with the state's money need to stop.
