Illinois Agriculture Exports Not Just Crops
Farm exports from Illinois include those with four legs.

The state's agriculture department says the second half of this year has been a busy time with what officials call a "reverse trade mission," livestock buyers from outside the United States who come to Illinois to check out swine and cattle. Ag department spokesman Jeff Squibb says an example of that is a Mexican dairy operation's recent purchase of 226 Holsteins from west central Illinois.

Squibb says marketing the state's livestock pays off. "For every dollar that we spend on trade missions and trade shows, those types of activities, we generate $174 in sales," Squibb said. "That money, we believe, is well-spent and a sound investment in Illinois agriculture."

Squibb says money coming in from livestock exports is more than $1 million this year.

Squibb adds that Illinois swine is headed to Panana and the Dominican Republic as breeding stock after sales in the past few months, while Costa Rica and Mexico are planning to look at the state's swine yet this year.
