Illinois Ranks High in New Board Certified Teachers
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ Illinois ranks fourth among U.S. states for having the highest number of teachers achieving National Board Certification in 2009.

More than 730 Illinois teachers achieved the voluntary professional certification this year.

Teachers must pass tests in the subject they teach and analyze their teaching strategies to get the credential. Certification typically takes one to three years to complete.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards released the numbers earlier this week. This is the fourth straight year Illinois has ranked among the top 10 states for the number of new teachers achieving the credential.

States with the highest number of teachers achieving National Board Certification in 2009 are: North Carolina, Washington, South Carolina, Illinois and Florida. On the Net at www.nbpts.org.
