District 205 Changes Internet Use Policy to Reflect State Law
Some new state laws are resulting in what essentially are changes to the policy regarding internet use in the Galesburg School District.

The District-205 Board recently approved a number of changes to the district's internet use policy following a public hearing on the matter.

District Technology Curriculum Coordinator Matt Jacobson told the board at least part of the new policy requires students to be taught how to use the internet.

"(The new law is) requiring us to teach internet safety lessons to students annually, grades three through 12," Jacobson said. "That became effective July 1 of this year."

The bill requires school districts to present the material in an age-appropriate manner, but in its final form, a requirement that three hours of such coursework be done was deleted, instead owing to local school boards to make that determination.

But Jacobson says the changes also come as the Federal Communications Commission recently issued a notice proposing a requirement that all school districts hold a public hearing on their internet safety policies.
