"Stuff the Truck" Stuffs Safe Harbor
The Galesburg community has once again gone out of its way, according to one group who is the latest beneficiary of a city's generosity at a time when it's needed the most.

Galesburg Broadcasting Company station WLSR "The Laser" hosted its eighth annual "Stuff the Truck" toy drive over the weekend to benefit Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center. Not only did they stuff a truck, they stuffed a whole trailer full of toy trucks, and games, and bicycles, and other things Safe Harbor Children's Advocate Julie says will be a huge help.

Julie tells WGIL Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time for someone trying to essentially flee their home if they or their family has been the victim of domestic violence.

"The thought of purchasing Christmas gifts, or not being able to purchase Christmas gifts for their children, can be one more barrier to a woman leaving that violent situation," Julie said. "So, at Safe Harbor, we do what we can to ease that stress for our clients around the Christmas season."

Julie says the "Stuff the Truck" drive is part of a larger holiday toy drive effort Safe Harbor puts together every year. And this year, she says the need is greater than ever.

Julie says there are just over 200 clients who have signed up to receive toys this year, up about 20 or so from last year.

"Stuff the Truck" is one of a number of toy drives community organizations do this time of year, from the Galesburg Archery Club to the Salvation Army among others.
