U.S. Senate Candidate Stops in Galesburg
One of the five Democrats looking to fill President Barack Obama's old seat in the U.S. Senate says he understands the plight of areas like Galesbug that have been hit hard with plant closures.

Doctor Robert Marshall is a radiologist at a Kankakee hospital, and was in Galesburg speaking with reporters Monday inbetween actual campaign stops in other cities. Marshall was asked about what can be done to help areas like Galesburg, who have lost jobs due to closings like that of the Maytag plant, which saw several thousand jobs get moved to Mexico.

Marshall tells WGIL there are things that could be done to penalize companies who do that, while at the same time helping the middle class.

"Businesses throughout the country -- whatever tax breaks they have -- they should not get those tax breaks, if they export jobs like that," Marshall said. "Other things we can do to stimulate the economy everywhere is to decrease middle class tax rates. That stimulates the economy very quickly. The stimulus program that we have now...is very good. We need new roads and schools. But it tends to act very slowly."

Marshall says he'd like to see U-S exports increased while, at the same time, setting up a program to get people to "buy American."

"There's enough money in this country to solve all our problems," Marshall said.
