Still Opposition to Knox County YMCA Getting City Money for Soccer Complex
Even though the Galesburg City Council has unanimously approved contributing roughly $400,000 to the campaign to raise funds for a new soccer complex at the Knox County YMCA that doesn't mean there aren't detractors.

Aldermen made the vote Monday night to contribute to the Y's campaign, using a combination of tax dollars and money left to the city in a memorial fund for building a soccer complex.

But the one critic to the project is resident Mike Kroll, who told aldermen the city's portion of the money could be better spent on the rest of the city's parks.

"The City Council, and the City of Galesburg, have a long history of neglecting our city park facilities," Kroll said. "We take care of those things that bring in money, such as Lakeside (Recreation Facility), and we expand things that, we hope, will bring in money, such as the (Lakeside SplashZone) water park, that has failed to bring in the money that was projected."

Kroll said, "We've done a crappy job" with the city's parks, calling the city's policies there "short-sighted." The businessman also accused the Knox County Y of being inaccessible to members of the public who can't afford memberships there.

Y officials quickly rebuked that, citing the fact they don't turn anyone away regardless of income, and even have scholarships and membership discounts available to those who need them.

Carl Sandburg College and the Galesburg School District have already committed to helping build the new soccer complex, on which dirt will start to turn next year and be ready in 2011.
