Durbin: Thomson Still in Running for Gitmo Detainees
Sen. Dick Durbin says a nearly empty state prison in Illinois appears to be the leading facility in the running to become the new home for Guantanamo Bay detainees.

Durbin said Wednesday he didn't want to assume Thomson Correctional Center will be chosen, but the level of interest by the administration is very encouraging.

The comments by the Illinois Democrat came after a briefing by Defense Department and U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials that was attended by most of Illinois' congressional delegation.

Durbin calls the discussion among lawmakers "spirited." He says he supports suggestions made by some Thomson critics, including a classified briefing and the need for intelligence agencies to conduct a risk assessment of each detainee.
