Senate Hopefuls Debate Gun Control, 2nd Amendment
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Democrats running for U.S. Senate in Illinois are quick to voice support for the Second Amendment. But they also want some restrictions on firearms -- particularly assault-style guns.

Democrat Cheryle Jackson says gun violence is rooted in a poor economy and a lack of jobs.

But Jackson and other Democrats support reinstating the federal assault weapons ban in answer to an Associated Press questionnaire.

Democrat Alexi Giannoulias doesn't mention the ban but opposes semiautomatic weapons in Chicago.

David Hoffman wants to invest more in community efforts to crack down on illegal guns, and Jacob Meister supports the ban.

Republican Mark Kirk supports "sensible measures to reduce illegal gun violence." GOP opponents Patrick Hughes, Kathleen Thomas and Andy Martin all oppose an assault-weapons ban.
