Revolving Loan for Bondi Building Approved
A number of renovations for a downtown Galesburg building can now move forward since a loan will be coming the project's way from the City of Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night voted to approve a $127,000 revolving loan for the Bondi Building, along with a $27,000 Facade Renovation Grant.

Building officials say they plan to replace 136 windows and fix concrete and building lentils, all in a bid to make the building more energy efficient for the roughly 50 different tenants.

While the vote was unanimous, Fifth Ward Alderwoman Karen Lafferty still had concerns -- among them, just how much local work would be going into the project.

"It would be nice if bids could be let out to local companies, so that the putting the windows in, the workmanship of it, could possibly be done by a local construction company," Lafferty said. "I understand there were no bids put out on this one."

Bondi Building Corporation Vice President Thom West says there were secured bids from several companies that could install the specific type of windows put in the building, and the company was looking for a firm with the specific expertise necessary to do the job.

West does say that there are two local contractors involved in the project, which is slated to begin in February or March.
