Quinn Defends Early Release Task Force
Gov. Pat Quinn defends his appointment of a task force to discover how the Department of Corrections started letting out prisoners who had served only a small portion of their sentences.

A state lawmaker, State Rep. Jack D. Franks (D-Woodstock), says the governor is trying to duck direct responsibility for the snafu by punting it to a task force, but Quinn says task forces can discover problems that insiders might not.

"It's always good to get independent points of view, people who know what they're talking about, who have wide experience, who are veterans in this area," he said.

Judge David Erickson is on the task force along with the governor's chief of staff, Jerry Stermer, and his chief lawyer. Quinn says he's not trying to keep the issue buried until after the primary; he says it'll be done "rather quickly."

Franks criticized the governor for resorting to a task force to examine a department directly under his control, unlike the University of Illinois, for which a task force was formed to examine admission practices.
