Candidate for Governor Wants to Ban Teacher Strikes
Should teachers be banned from going on strike? A candidate in the Republican primary for governor says teachers' strikes ought to be banned.

Adam Andrzejewski says Republican primary voters like the idea. He says teachers have too much leverage under the current system. "I'm not against teachers, but what I am against in this current economic time, is that when teachers are able to hold the children as pawns in a closed-door negotiating process, their benefits, their perks are a lot better and higher than the equivalent benefits and perks in the private sector," he says.

In states that don't allow teachers to go on strike, arbitration is used if negotiations end up deadlocked. Andrzejewski says that's a better system, though not perfect.

Andrzejewski took the idea from the Illinois Association of School Boards, which endorsed the idea of legislating against teacher strikes. Andrzejewski says this is a bit of a surprise, because school boards are often packed with members favorable to employees.
