City of Galesburg Christmas Tree Drop-Off Underway
If you're already ready to move on from Christmas, the City of Galesburg says it can help you with part of that while putting a bit less of a strain on the environment.

The city has a Christmas tree drop-off site in the parking lot of the Galesburg Lowe's store starting Saturday and running through next Sunday. City Public Works Director Larry Cox says Lowe's has donated the location, while Waste Management is providing some of the other costs and the dumpster the trees will be loaded into.

Cox tells W-G-I-L there's a few things you need to do before you can bring your Christmas tree to the site. "It can't be inside any plastic bags, there can't be any ornaments or lights on the tree (and) you should obviously take the tree stand off," Cox said. "We don't want any artificial things (at the drop-off site). If (there are) any artificial things there they cannot be put into the bin and composted."

Cox says that's where the Knox County landfill comes in. They've agreed to mulch all the trees taken to the drop-off site.

He says residents can still put their trees on the curb for their normal garbage pick-up day, but he says those will just sit in the landfill and not be mulched.
