Internet Cutting Into TV, Radio Ad Money
They are as close as your radio or television -- campaign commercials. But a University of Illinois professor says the Internet has equalized things, in a way, by letting people get their message out for very little money.

Brian Gaines, a political science professor with the U of I's Institute of Government and Public Affairs, says when it comes to commercials, voters seem to remember a misleading ad more than they remember a news story about how that ad is misleading.

He adds that while the money spent on political ads is disturbing to some, it's still far less than the amount spent to try to get you to buy a brand of toothpaste or beer.

And about endorsements, Gaines says if nothing else, they serve as shorthand for voters to try to tell the differences among candidates.
