Local Congressman in Afghanistan
U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) has arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and has several opinions on U.S. forces being in the region.

Schock says he agrees with Karzai that the surge strategy is fine, but thinks it would be more effective if no one outside top Afghan and the U.S. military officials knew about the 18-month pullout goal. Schock explained that Karzai believes terrorists will "hibernate" until U.S. troops are gone. Schock does say that it's clear that American troops must be in Afghanistan until the country can protect itself against terrorists.

Schock also points out that the city of Kabul is antiquated. Schock says he thought he couldn't see because of the dust, but was then told it was pollution clouding the view. He says given all the money given to the country to rebuild, he's surprised to see no drainage system, few sidewalks, and buildings that look bombed out.
