Illinois Gives Out "Environmental Hero" Awards
CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn has recognized Illinoisans with this year's Environmental Hero Awards.

Quinn's office announced the 2009 award winners on Tuesday, saying the yearly award is given to those with a strong commitment to the Illinois environment. This year 22 individuals and groups were chosen for the award.

Among the winners is Jack Harrier, the head custodian at Danville School District 118. The governor's office says Harrier has saved the district nearly $1 million by turning off lights and electronics at night and making other energy-saving efforts.

Quinn says the winners worked to make Illinois "a cleaner, greener and better place for everyone."
