Clarification on Smoke-Free Illinois Complaints
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Illinois Public Health Department has received more than 8,000 smoking-related complaints since the Smoke Free Illinois Act went into effect.

The act banning cigarette smoking in public places went into effect Jan. 1, 2008.

Health department spokeswoman Kelly Jakubek said Tuesday there were about 5,500 complaints to the department in 2008. That number decreased to about 2,600 complaints so far this year.

Officials also say the complaints called in this year have been more legitimate, and there have been more fines.

Sean McDermott of Cook County's health agency says inspectors who go out actually find people smoking more often.
