City Manager Supports Various Aspects of Downtown Expansion, Including Proposed Boutique Hotel
Galesburg City Manager Dane Bragg says he still believes downtown Galesburg is unique, and a number of projects the city will work on in 2010 will help keep the area vibrant, and vital.

Bragg told WGIL's "Galesburg Live" that work started this year with the expansion of parking around the Galesburg Amtrak depot, and the connecting of two parking lots for Amtrak riders that, he says, has turned out to work even better than he might have envisioned.

But Bragg also tells WGIL the study that should be available in the coming weeks regarding whether or not the former Ferris Moving and Storage on Mulberry Street can become a boutique hotel of sorts is also crucial to that.

"I think we're really starting to snowball that altogether into a really unique area," Bragg said, "not only for our local residents, but for people from all around to come and enjoy downtown Galesburg."

A published report suggests such a hotel could hinge on the National Railroad Hall of Fame building in downtown Galesburg. Bragg says he believes the Hall, coupled with the Amtrak depot, the Galesburg Railroad Museum, and all the rest of the downtown, will remain important to the city, especially as the city competes with other areas for rail passengers.
