Advocates Say Smoking Ban Violation Decreases Are Good
One of the most active advocates for a ban on smoking in Illinois' public places is pleased to hear that the number of complaints has decreased. The number of complaints last year, which was the first year for the ban, was 5,501. This year, that number stands at 2,689 (as of Dec. 29). Kathy Drea, vice president of advocacy for the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest, believes the drop means that more facilities are in compliance.

She says she never heard complaints anymore about illegal smoking in restaurants or casinos, but receives some about bars in communities where local police and the local public health department are not checking for compliance. She says even four checks a year can persuade a manager to make sure no one's smoking.

Drea already has some goals for 2010 related to the ban on smoking in public places. She plans to look into the so-called "smokeless" electronic cigarettes, and may start pushing for higher violation fees, including the possible loss of a liquor license on a third violation.

Complaints can be called in to IDPH at 866-973-4646, or sent via the Internet by CLICKING HERE.
