Fire Damages Classrooms at AlWood High School
FIRST REPORTED 5:50 a-m, UPDATED 10:23 a-m 12/31/09 A fire overnight caused damage to two rooms at Alwood High School.

The school's fire alarms went off around 11:00 Wednesday night, alerting firefighters from the Clover Township Fire Department. The Oxford Township Fire Department also responded.

Alwood superintendent Shannon Bumann says the fire started in a former home economics classroom that's no longer used. He says that room sustained significant fire damage. Bumann says a second classroom, where Spanish is taught, was partially damaged. It's not known at this time what caused the fire, which is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Bumann says his main concern is smoke damage throughout the building and getting that cleaned up by the time students return to school on Monday. He says a restoration crew was on site this morning.

Bumann wouldn't speculate on the dollar amount of damage done by the fire. He says that also includes a hole in the school's roof caused by flames.
