A New Years Eve Reminder to Stay Safe
The end-of-the-year push to lower the number of traffic deaths in the state could easily mean being pulled over one of the next couple of nights.

"Operation Save 100" is the ongoing stepped-up enforcement period continuing until New Years Day or so, has so far netted 1,800 arrests for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol arrests according to state officials, along with 147 arrests to teenagers breaking the law for drinking under the state's Zero Tolerance statute, and nearly 10,000 tickets issued for not wearing a seat belt.

Illinois Department of Transportation Spokesperson Marisa Kollias says some may not still understand what "Operation Save 100" means.

"It's an end of the year push to lead the state of Illinois to its lowest number of motor vehicle deaths, really, since last century," Kollias said.

Kollias says the main focus will be drivers on the roads during the evening and overnight hours -- when alcohol-related accidents occur, and when most people are driving anyway.

"This high-visibility enforcement effort really comes at a time of year when many people are travelling to visit family and friends across the state. So it's really a nice time for us to focus on safety, especially on the holidays."

Kollias says roughly three-hundred different law enforcement agencies are taking part in "Operation Save 100" -- so it won't be just troopers on the lookout Thursday night and this weekend.
