Abingdon Water Meter Replacement Project Begins; City Seeks Cooperation
POSTED 10:01 a-m 12/3/9 Officials with the city of Abingdon are asking residents for cooperation as a major project is set to get underway.

The city has authorized the contractor that was hired in early September to begin replacing around 1,200 residential water meters. City officials say the company, Professional Meters, Inc., will need to gain access to the old meters in peoples' homes as part of the touch-read meter reading project. The project is being paid for with a no-interest federal stimulus loan the city applied for and received.

The city has sent out cards to Abingdon residents asking them to arrange an appointment to have their meters replaced by calling the contractor using a toll-free number: 1-866-965-0657.

A spokesperson at City Hall says some residents have called there, concerned that the card they've received might be part of a scam.

The program is legitimate, and those who've received one of the Water Meter Service Notice cards should make appointments for the meter upgrade between 8 a-m and 5 p-m, Monday through Friday, and between 8 a-m and 12 p-m on Saturdays.
