Galesburg Couple Donates Civil War Era Diary to Lincoln Library and Museum
POSTED 7:48 a-m 12/4/09 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Dr. James Black's 428-page diary gives history buffs a 146-year-old glimpse of life during the Civil War.

Black was a physician from Salem (Ill.) during the war. His diary was recently donated by a distant relative from Galesburg to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum's collection of Civil War artifacts.

The library in Springfield has 122 Civil War diaries. But Illinois State Historian Thomas Schwartz says Black's ledger is unique because it offers insight into the doctors who treated wounded soldiers.

Black was born in 1835 and died in 1902. His diary was donated by retired high school history teachers Benita and David Moore of Galesburg.
