Durbin Says Health Care Reform Work Will Continue
The weekend might not bring a final vote on national health care reform, but U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) expects his chamber to get much closer to such a vote.

Durbin says the pace is slow, with the Senate voting on amendments at about one per day, on average. He says the focus now is on finding a compromise on abortion and the public coverage option.

As for the abortion debate, Durbin acknowledges that Democrats need every one of their caucus' votes, and says that's why it’s critical that Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), a pro-life Democrat, be a part of finding a compromise so that he'll vote for the main bill.

A compromise on the public option could come from Sen. Marie Cantwell (D-Wash.), who’s proposing an option that states could use to negotiate their own plans. Durbin says he and a lot of other Democrats are interested in Cantwell's plan.

Senators will be at the nation's capitol over the weekend to work on the reform package.
