District 205's Purchase of Former Grocery Store Moves Forward
Plans are still moving forward for the Galesburg School District to officially purchase a now-vacant former grocery store near Silas Willard Elementary School, even though just what exactly it will be used for still remains in question.

The District-205 board's Budget Committee Thursday heard about the various options available for entering into a lease-to-purchase agreement for the former Giant Foods at Seminary and Fremont Streets that would end up costing the district about $200,000, but also heard about what would be needed to add another $650,000 on to that in order to convert the building into classrooms -- something officials say could be necessary in the next couple of years.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill was asked if the school board's building committee had discussed any potential options for the building just yet.

"No, they haven't discussed it," Cahill said. "I've thought about it. We have this master facility planning going on, and it might be an outcome of those discussions as to how best to utilize the facility."

Cahill is referring to a recently-formed 20-year Master Facilities Planning Committee that has already had several meetings, trying to identify current and future needs for all of the district's buildings.

He does say if the board does go forward with remodeling the building, construction could take four months, but add another two to three months on to that for the bid process.
