| Monmouth College Receives Grant from Cargill |
Monmouth College has received the first installments of a five-year, $50,000 grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation's 2009 Restricted Grant Program.
Monmouth was among the first of a limited number of higher education institutions contacted by the foundation to apply to be part of the program, and not all of the applications were accepted. Funding will continue over the next four years.
The foundation was established by Margaret A. Cargill, granddaughter of William Cargill, a co-founder of Cargill Inc., one of the world's largest agribusiness companies. During her lifetime, Cargill donated a considerable amount of her wealth to causes that were dear to her, including the environment, the arts, disaster relief and children. In particular, teacher education was noted as one of her strongest philanthropic passions. Margaret Cargill died in 2006.
Monmouth College plans to use the initial gift from the foundation to launch a program related to historical artifacts that will be housed in Gallery 203 in Hewes Library. The program would provide practicum opportunities for the college's prospective teachers, its sociology and anthropology majors and students from surrounding school systems.
"We are very proud that Monmouth was among the colleges that were asked to apply for and then chosen to receive funding from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation," said MC president Mauri Ditzler. "This is a generous gesture of major commitment to Monmouth and our mission."
