Galesburg School District and Groups Plan Extended Winter Break Activities
The Galesburg School District is, for the first time, letting students out for a month long holiday break as an attempt to save money in its budget, and several groups are banding together to make sure that the kids' time isn't wasted.

The Galesburg Public Library, District-205, and a sub-group of the People in Galesburg organization called the Hunger Action Group, are among others planning activities for the kids.

For the first two full weeks in January, the Hunger Action Group will be providing sack lunches to District-205 students, and group member Peter Schwartzman tells WGIL it should be convenient for those students to get lunch.

"It's obviously likely going to be cold in January and we're not providing transportation so it's a pick up. We wanted to have locations in enough spots around the four quadrants of the city so that the children would only have to walk a few blocks to get their lunch. And it turned out as we contacted churches and civic organizations and so forth we were able to pull together now we have 13 locations that will be available."

Schwartzman says registration forms for the free lunches are being sent home with district students, and are also available online at "lunch spot-dot-info" or at the Galesburg Public Library and the Knox County Regional Office of Education.

He says donations for the lunches and volunteers to make them, are also needed, and more information is available at the website.
