Annual Solstice Gathering in Cahokia Mounds
(IRN)-Ahead of the winter solstice, there will be a gathering at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville.

The annual winter solstice sunrise observance will be held on Dec. 19. The point of the event, says assistant site manager Bill Iseminger, is to demonstrate what's called Woodhenge, a sun calendar that was used by natives.

Uncovered by archeologists in the 1960s, Woodhenge uses several wood posts that, at both solstices and equinoxes, aligns the sunrise with an outer post and a center post.

"It has a similar function as Stonehenge, but there is no connection in time or space or anything else," Iseminger said, referring to the ancient stone structure in England.

The demonstration, which begins at 7 a.m., is open to everyone.
