Illinois EPA Releases 2009 Air Quality Report
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says air quality in 2009 was the same or improved throughout most of the state compared to the previous year.

The EPA issued its annual report Friday. It says air quality measured at the agency's 80 monitoring sites overall was good or moderate 96 percent of the time. There were 13 days when air quality was considered unhealthy for sensitive groups in certain areas, compared to 14 days in 2008.

Of the areas monitored, good air quality was found most often in the Quad Cities, 86 percent of the time.

The EPA measures for a variety of pollutants, including toxins, ground-level ozone and fine particles, or soot.

Most pollutants have decreased steadily over the last decade.
