| Norm Winick Passes Away |
POSTED 12:53pm, UPDATED 1:05pm 12/10/10 A final edition of the newspaper a Galesburg man was the publisher of had just come off the presses, when the man's battle with cancer came to an end.
Local resident and columnist for "The Zephyr," Mike Kroll, says Norm Winick passed away Friday morning just after 8am with his family by his side.
Winick had been editor and Publisher of "The Zephyr" for all of its 21 years of existence, but the last paper rolled off the press in late-October, as Winick fought the disease. Just Friday morning, a final edition -- extensively a tribute to the paper and to Winick, was published and distributed to local outlets.
In that, Winick said he was first diagnosed with cancer a couple months ago after going to the emergency room with stomach pains.
He says he spent a month in a Peoria Hospital before deciding he didn't want to go through with cancer treatments that would only give him either a 50-percent chance at survival, or about six months to live.
Winick's family told The Zephyr he had been at home with hospice care ever since.
Winick described publishing "The Zephyr" as a labor love, that was never a real money-maker, sustained eventually by the publishing of legal notices.
A statement issued by Kroll indicates that funeral services for Winick have yet to be announced.
