Poetry Contest to Commemorate Reagan Centennial
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois school students are encouraged to write poems to commemorate the late President Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday.

The Reagan Centennial Commission is sponsoring a poetry contest for elementary, middle and high school pupils.

Entries must be submitted by Jan. 15, 2011. Illinois Poet Laureate Kevin Stein will judge entries in the three age divisions.

Local winners will advance to area-wide competitions. Winners there will receive $50 gift cards and advance to state finals which will be April 8 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Other sponsors are the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois Regional Superintendents of Schools.

First- and second-place winners will receive mobile computing devices and teachers of the winners will win prizes valued at $50.

Reagan was born Feb. 6, 1911 in Tampico.
