Monmouth College President has New Book
A former president of Monmouth College has a new book out, and it details intelligence work he was assigned to do in a previous career.

Bruce Haywood has published the book "Bremerhaven," a book that he calls a memoir of his two years in the mid-1940's in Germany.

Haywood tells WGIL he was part of a British intelligence team that was doing work with a similar American group, and says he wouldn't have written the book except for having found letters written to his mother.

"I was sorting through her stuff, and there in her underwear drawer were all of these letters that I'd written to her during the four years I'd been in the army."

Haywood says it wasn't an easy decision deciding to use the letters to write the book.

"When I began to think about using them, my first thought was to simply publish the letters, and then I thought oh heavens no. Then I though perhaps excerpts from the letters and it might make a book, then I found that would no be coherent, I'd be jumping around from topic to topic."

Haywood says he eventually settled on the proper way to use the letters after abandoning the project for a time.

Bremerhaven is available at several locations in Galesburg and Monmouth, and it's also on amazon-dot-com.
