U of I Starts Search for Urbana Chancellor
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- A committee set up to find a new chancellor for the University of Illinois' flagship campus will begin work next week.

Doug Beck is a physics professor at the university's Urbana-Champaign campus and chairman of the committee. He told The (Champaign) News-Gazette on Monday that the group will start by hiring a search firm and drafting a national advertisement for the position.

Beck says the committee's goal is to name a new chancellor by May.

The chancellor is the top position at the campus. The three-campus university system's leader is President Michael Hogan.

Interim Chancellor Robert Easter has run the Urbana-Champaign campus since Richard Herman resigned in October 2009 over the university's admissions scandal.

Easter isn't a candidate because he plans to retire soon.
