Whooping Cough on the Rise
(IRN)-It's a comeback you won't like; whooping cough.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, are on the rise in the state. Mark Amerson, a public service administrator in the department's immunization program, says part of the problem is more people are not responding well to the vaccine. Another is the phenomenon of waning immunity.

Amerson says you may have thought whooping cough was something we'd beaten: "The vaccine production and distribution and administration over the last 50 years has really put that to rest, but what we are seeing recently is a resurgence of pertussis."

The total of cases reported in Illinois this year is almost 900, compared with 648 in all of 2009.
