Illinois Meets with Other States to Share Road Safety Tips
(IRN)-Illinois is trying to be a leader in safety on the roads, and even with no helmet law, that extends to the motorcycle.

Mike Stout, traffic safety director for the Illinois Department of Transportation, says the state is one of only two offering free training to motorcyclists. He says trainers from four regions of the state are meeting in Springfield with counterparts from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Stout, a former biker himself, says you don't just hop on and ride; you have to learn how to ride the motorcycle, get an endorsement for your license, and, despite the fact that it is optional, put on a helmet. Stout says of the motorcycle fatalities in Illinois, 82 percent are with no helmet, and 20 percent are without the proper license.

Stout says the training benefits about 20,000 Illinoisans a year.
