Push for Energy Changes in Illinois
(IRN)-By now most of us know about the phasing out of incandescent light bulbs in exchange for energy-sipping compact florescent bulbs. But what you might not know is the push to end the use of one type of florescent lighting fixture found in many buildings across the state and nation.

The federal government has mandated that T12 lamps be phased out of production in 2012. Approximately 30 percent of florescent lamps sold in the U.S. are still T12 technology.

To help the public sector and public schools upgrade to high efficiency T8 or T5 lamps, the state's Illinois Energy Now program is offering cash saving incentives.

Those looking for financial help in upgrading their lighting can go to Illinois' Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity website. There they will find an easy to fill out form that will calculate what savings they are eligible for depending on the size of the project.

The Illinois Energy Now program for florescent lamp replacement runs through April 15, 2011. Those eligible include municipalities, park districts, fire departments, public schools, public universities, community colleges and state and federal facilities within ComEd and Ameren electric service areas.
