Orpheum Heating Upgrades More Costly
Upgrades to the heating and air conditioning systems at the Galesburg Orpheum Theatre are likely going to cost more than originally thought, even though a contract for the work has yet to be signed.

That's according to theatre president Kate Francis, who told the Knox County County Civic Center Authority Board yesterday now that Wisconsin based Johnson Controls has completed its energy efficiency study of the theatre, in order to do all the heating and cooling upgrades necessary, it will likely cost $906,000, about $80,000 more than first estimated.

Francis says that's because some additions have been made to the plans.

"Includes the addition of a package HVAC unit servicing the lobby, basically zoning the lobby separate from the auditorium, the demolition and disposing of the abandoned boiler to free up space needed in the dressing rooms, demolishing and disposing of radiators on the east wall of the stage, which also gives us another six inches or so eight inches of space, which in the theatre world can help quite a bit."

That's in addition to some other changes listed.

Francis says she and the theatre's attorney will work on fine-tuning the plan and negotiating with Johnson Controls some more, and that a special meeting will be planned for January where the only item of discussion will be the proposed upgrades.

Currently, the theatre has either in hand or committed to the project, roughly $362,000.
