Searching for Solutions to Asian Carp
(IRN)-Time is not on the side of the Great Lakes, in the effort to keep them free of Asian carp. Members of the Obama administration Thursday discussed the federal government's strategy for protecting the waters from that invasive pest, though environmentalists still have concerns.

Realizing there are competing interests at work, "Our vision is for a 21st Century rethink of this whole thing," says Envrionment Illinois program director Max Muller. He says if Chicago were to thoroughly treat its sewage, it could stop sending it to the Mississippi River and re-reverse the flow of the Chicago River. "It achieves separating the ecosystems, improving stormwater management, wastewater treatment, and transportation through the region. We are urging the Army Corps of Engineers to dramatically speed up the rate at which they are studying it, so that they can have recommendations within the next eighteen months."

Muller says a five year study would simply take too long. He adds that the well publicized decision not to close the locks between Lake Michigan and the inland waterway is not that significant because it would not prevent, for example, eggs from getting through; also, there is always the possibility of flooding and of water going over the locks.
