Contracts Set for IL Utility Companies
(IRN)-Another chapter in the story of Illinois electricity is about ready to begin. State regulators have approved the largest utility companies, ComEd and Ameren Illinois, to enter into long term contracts (20 years) with providers.

The process, through the recently formed Illinois Power Authority, comes out of the rate relief debates at the Capitol and around the state in 2007, as does a requirement for a portion of the electricity to be purchased from renewable sources. That proportion is on a sliding scale, says Leigh Morris, a spokesman for Ameren Illinois, starting at 5 percent this year and ascending to 25 percent by 2025.

Morris says the arrangement provides the wind and solar providers with a guaranteed customer, and it protects the utilities and their customers from rising prices.
