Senate Could Take Up Gambling Bill Wednesday
(IRN)-One more vote down, as the gambling expansion plan makes it through a Senate committee. The Senate Executive Committee passed the package, which includes four new casinos, extra slots at current casinos, plus slots at racetracks largely along party lines. The bill could come up for a vote in the full Senate Wednesday.

Several Republicans, like Senator Dale Righter and Senator John O. Jones, voted against the plan because they're not pleased with how the video poker expansion has progressed. Both say the timeline for this new proposal is too optimistic given that video poker has still not been implemented.

Even Democrat Senator James Clayborne has concerns. He says he'd rather the racetracks only open their proposed slots during race hours, because he's worried that the track owners will put all their money into slots, and not on the races.

Some lawmakers are concerned that even if this plan passes in the full Senate, it won't pass in the House because it's become so large. It's supposed to generate about a billion dollars a year in new money.
