Drug Policy Still Analyzed in Abingdon School District
The Abingdon School District is still doing lots of research on a potential policy that could result in at least student athletes getting tested for drugs.

District-217 Superintendent Tami Roskamp says the school board Wednesday night heard an update on what a committee of school district officials and others is doing to look into forming a drug testing policy.

Roskamp tells WGIL the committee, which includes at least one school board member and Police Chief Fred Andrews, has a lot of homework to do in the next month or so.

"They met this last month and are talking about different policies of athletes and drug testing and what other schools do. Roger Schrodt is the representative from the board on the committee and he reported back that they met initially and are discussing, again, data, other policies, concerns in general, they will report back in February."

Roskamp says there are valid concerns with drug testing in the district, like just how far back in grade levels the testing would be done in, how often, and especially the cost, but she says no one thinks that some form of drug testing shouldn't happen.

The District-217 board Wednesday night voted, effective immediately, to enact a policy canceling all athletic events if school is canceled, or dismissed early, due to weather.
