Get Ready for Red Light Cameras
(IRN)-A new law regarding red light cameras takes effect January 1st.

The law sets standards for what constitutes an infraction, requires a police or city official to review violations before issuing a ticket, establishes standards for appeals, and ban the practice of offering a discount to drivers who pay without appealing.

Brad Roeber, president of the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club, says the cameras do promote safety, but he doesn't want them used just to generate general revenue. He says the money collected from violators should be used to improve intersections where violations occur, or the nearby roads. There is no law requiring that.

The law was enacted due to concerns that cities were profiting off cameras that tickets drivers for turning right on red without stopping, which is illegal but is much less dangerous than crossing an intersection while the light is red, and to address concerns that tickets were being issued by the private companies that operate the cameras, whose incentive is to generate revenue rather than to administer justice.

In Illinois, red light cameras are operating now only in the Metro East area, Chicago and the suburbs.
