Governor Touts State Veterans Programs
(IRN)-Three programs that help military veterans and the families of service personnel are asking for your help.

■ The Hero Miles program uses donated frequent flyer miles on eight airlines to get the families of injured service personnel to the military hospital to see their loved one. The airlines participating are AirTran , Alaska Airlines, American, Continental, Frontier, Midwest , United and U.S. Airways. Since the program's inception, more than 20,000 donated tickets have been issued, saving military families $27 million.

■ The Illinois Military Family Relief Fund uses donations to make grants to families of military personnel that are in need. Many of the beneficiaries are families of National Guard members who take a pay cut when they're activated. Since its inception in 2003, the fund has distributed more than $12 million to 22,400 recipients. The current balance is $379,000.

■ The Veterans Cash lottery game, which aids veterans' organizations, has generated $8.4 million for veterans' organizations since 2006. Tickets are $2.

Anyone wishing to help can find information at www.OperationHomefront.org, which the governor says is the busiest website in state government.
