Illinois Worst of All State at Paying Bills
(IRN)-Illinois is the worst state in the nation when it comes to not paying its bills.

This is according to state Comptroller Dan Hynes, who discussed the issue Sunday night on 60 Minutes.

"The state of Illinois is known as a deadbeat state," he said. "This is a reputation that has taken us years to earn, and we’ve reached the heights of becoming the worst in the country."

Hynes has kept a low profile since losing the Democratic primary for governor 10 months ago, and he has only weeks left in office. He says when creditors call and ask for money, the best he can do is apologize.

The state is just finishing paying outstanding bills from Fiscal Year 2010, which ended June 30, and has about $5 billion in new unpaid bills stacked up from this fiscal year. The creditors are mainly medical providers, social service agencies, school districts, state universities, but also include landlords for office space rented by state lawmakers.
