More Teachers Getting Better Certifications
Lifelong learning is a goal of the best teachers, and nearly 5,000 of them are in the state of Illinois.

The Illinois State Board of Education says the state has the third most teachers earning national board certification for the first time, 771 total this, among almost 4,700 total in the state.

State Board spokesperson Mary Fergus says getting national certification is getting more and more popular.

"Like doctors and accountants, it's a process whereby they can hone their skills under the most rigorous standards, they expert evaluation, self-assessment, peer review, they go through a very arduous process to become the best in their field."

Data on how many area teachers received the certification was unavailable, but the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards says in this area, only the West Central School District provides financial help to teachers looking for national certification.

Fergus says the more districts that can provide incentives or help, the better. She says it's one way to fight the continuing problems of teachers dropping out of the profession after just a few years.
